The highly anticipated sequel in the Rascal Does Not Dream series has made its return with Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, and the first episode comes with a powerful reveal. Fans were treated to both the creditless opening and ending theme songs, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the emotional journey ahead. The opening theme titled “Snowdrop” is performed by Conton Candy, while the ending theme “Suiheisen wa Boku no Furukizu” brings together the voices of Uzuki Hirokawa, Ikumi Akagi, Sara Himeji, and Touko Kirishima, all sung by their respective cast members.
Studio CloverWorks is once again helming the animation, continuing their signature aesthetic that fans have come to love. The franchise previously released a visual for the Lost Singer Arc, highlighting Uzuki Hirokawa of Sweet Bullet standing with a microphone, hinting at a deeper personal conflict. The tagline reads, “Was this really the place I wanted to come to?” setting the emotional tone for what’s to follow in the arc.
The new anime follows the events of the Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai series and adapts the fourteenth volume of the light novel series by Hajime Kamoshida. As part of the sequel, Soichi Masui returns as director, Masahiro Yokotani oversees the series composition, and character design is led by Satomi Tamura. Music continues to be a powerful storytelling tool in the series, with fox capture plan handling the score.
The story picks up with Sakuta Azusagawa facing an unusual and confusing situation. While trying to protect Mai Sakurajima, he discovers that Toko Kirishima, the person he needs to rely on, might not be who she claims to be. In fact, there are multiple versions of Toko Kirishima, raising serious questions about identity and trust. As Sakuta navigates these blurred lines between reality and illusion, he must rely on hints from his friends’ mysterious dreams to find the real Toko and uncover the truth behind this magical phenomenon before it threatens Mai’s safety.
The voice cast remains as impressive as ever. Asami Seto returns as Mai Sakurajima, with Kaito Ishikawa voicing Sakuta Azusagawa. The cast also includes Reina Ueda as Mini Skirt Santa, Yurika Kubo as Kaede Azusagawa, Nao Toyama as Tomoe Koga, Atsumi Tanezaki as Rio Futaba, Maaya Uchida as Nodoka Toyohama, Inori Minase as Shoko Makinohara, and several more talented voices bringing emotional depth to the series’ complex characters.
The music videos for both the opening and ending songs were released following the premiere and have already sparked excitement within the fanbase. The songs’ heartfelt lyrics and stunning visuals match the show’s ongoing themes of identity, vulnerability, and emotional growth. These elements have been core to the Rascal Does Not Dream franchise from the very beginning, and this new chapter continues to explore them with a fresh narrative and evolving character arcs.
As this sequel begins to unfold, viewers can expect a mix of gentle romance, supernatural twists, and inner conflicts that resonate deeply. The first episode not only brings back the world fans missed but adds new layers of mystery and emotional stakes that promise an unforgettable journey.
