The anime adaptation of Uglymug, Epicfighter has revealed a striking new key visual featuring Karina, one of the Absolute Gods. Alongside the visual, it was confirmed that Chika Anzai will lend her voice to the character. Anzai expressed her excitement about joining the project, describing Karina as both powerful and deeply human, with layers of vulnerability hidden beneath her divine title. She also noted how the production team even adjusted recording techniques to capture the nuance in Karina’s voice, building anticipation for how those details will appear in the broadcast.
Voice Cast and New Character
Karina now joins the expanding cast of Uglymug, Epicfighter, which already features Junichi Suwabe as Yoshioka Shigeru, Maaya Uchida as Rizu, Kento Shiraishi as Seiji, and Konomi Inagaki as Seika. Chika Anzai’s addition is set to bring more depth to the unfolding narrative, especially as the story approaches its climax.
Production and Staff
The series is being produced by studio WHITE FOX with Toshiyuki Sone directing. The staff includes Kenta Ihara as series composer, Miki Matsumoto handling character design, and Ryo Kawasaki composing the music. The production is supported by Egg Firm, while Nippon Columbia oversees the music. The attention to detail from the creative team, including sound direction by Kohei Yoshida and special effects direction by Kumiko Taniguchi, suggests a polished final product that balances action, drama, and emotional storytelling.
Source Material and Adaptations
Uglymug, Epicfighter (Busamen Gachi Faita) originated as a web novel by Ryo Hiromatsu, serialized on Shosetsuka ni Naro from 2015 to 2022. A light novel adaptation illustrated by Akira Banpai was later published by Kobunsha in 2018. The series also received a manga adaptation by Osamu Kozuki, serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan from 2017 to 2020, with six collected volumes available. Fans can read the manga in English on Square Enix’s Manga Up! Global app.
A sequel manga titled Busamen Gachi Fighter SSS began serialization in December 2024, ensuring that the franchise continues to grow across different formats.
What Makes the Story Unique
The story follows Shigeru, an ex-salesman cursed with unbearable inconveniences — from having looks rated at minus 255 to suffering pain whenever he touches women. Despite this, he possesses extraordinary strength, creating a tale that mixes humor, hardship, and epic battles in a world where survival depends on more than just appearances. With Karina’s introduction, the balance between gods and mortals promises to grow even more complex.
