Takopi’s Original Sin has cemented its position as the most emotionally gripping anime of the summer, topping the Summer 2025 anime rankings for the second week in a row. The powerful psychological sci-fi drama by studio ENISHIYA has connected deeply with viewers since its premiere on June 28. After debuting with a high-ranking vote share in Week 1, the anime has managed to not only maintain but also increase its lead in Week 2.

In the first week, Takopi’s Original Sin claimed 8.10 percent of the vote from a total of 9,482 participants in the Anime Corner ranking. Even with major contenders like DAN DA DAN Season 2 and Grand Blue Dreaming Season 2 in the mix, Takopi's emotional storytelling gave it a strong advantage. Week 2 showed even more growth, with a 0.64 percent increase in votes, widening its margin at the top of the list. Its momentum reflects the kind of impact few short-format series manage to generate.

The anime is set to run for just six episodes, but each one so far has been packed with tension, heartbreak, and powerful performances. Directed and written by Shinya Iino, with character designs by Keita Nagahara, the anime is produced by ENISHIYA in collaboration with TBS Television. The direction has been praised for capturing the emotional nuances of the original manga while building a visual language that feels both surreal and grounded.

Takopi’s Original Sin is based on the manga created by Taizan 5, which originally ran on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Plus from late 2021 to early 2022. Despite being just two volumes long, the manga made a significant impression on readers and critics alike. VIZ Media’s English license brought it to a wider global audience, and the anime has only accelerated its global reputation.

The story follows Takopi, a pink octopus-like alien who lands on Earth not to invade or explore, but to spread happiness. However, the first person he meets is Shizuka, a deeply troubled fourth grader whose life is far more complex and tragic than he could have imagined. As Takopi uses his advanced gadgets to try and fix things, his well-intentioned efforts lead to heartbreaking consequences. The narrative explores themes of trauma, memory, guilt, and redemption, and has captivated viewers looking for depth beyond traditional seasonal fare.

The adaptation was officially announced in December 2025, and while it might be short in length, it has proven to be one of the most impactful anime of the year. As more episodes air, fans are already calling it a strong contender for Anime of the Season and even Anime of the Year. Its ability to evoke raw emotional responses, combined with striking visuals and a haunting musical score, makes it stand apart in a season dominated by sequels.

As Takopi’s Original Sin continues to climb, all eyes are on how the series will conclude its story within the remaining episodes. Whether it ends in hope, heartbreak, or both, one thing is clear it has already left a lasting impression.
