For weeks, One Piece fans have been spinning theories about a surprising connection between Brook and one of the Holy Knights. Chapter after chapter seemed to build toward a major reveal, and many believed that Brook was secretly the father of the mysterious Holy Knight named Gunko. It would have been a major twist for the Elbaph arc, finally placing the Straw Hat’s musician at the center of an emotionally charged storyline. But with the official release of volume 112, that theory has now been shut down completely.
The speculation began when subtle hints tied Brook to Gunko, including memory fragments and cryptic dialogue about a missing father. The theory gained traction because Brook is one of the few Straw Hats with a largely unexplored backstory post timeskip. Fans were hungry for deeper insight into his emotional world beyond his musical flair and comic timing. The idea of him having a long lost daughter added a layer of tragedy and complexity that made the theory compelling.
However, volume 112 contains a revised introduction to Gunko’s character that confirms she is from the Manmayer family. That small detail was enough to end the entire Brook as father theory. It was also backed by longtime One Piece analyst Artur, who explained how the family name clarification was Oda’s way of closing that door for good. For many readers, this may come as a disappointment. But in truth, it helps protect the consistency of Brook’s character and offers space for better storytelling.
In hindsight, the theory had flaws. Brook’s only consistent emotional goal throughout the series has been to reunite with Laboon, the whale he left behind. If he had abandoned a child as well, it would have drastically shifted the perception of his character. His light hearted presence, his haunting past, and his loyalty to Laboon all formed a very specific tone. Adding an estranged daughter into the mix could have complicated that tone in a way that felt unearned.
But just because Brook is not Gunko’s father does not mean his story is over in the Elbaph arc. In fact, this might be the best thing that could have happened for him. Gunko is still clearly connected to Brook in some way, emotionally or spiritually, and that connection may be the key to unlocking new layers of his personality. With Gunko now under the influence of Imu, there is potential for emotional conflict and dramatic tension that allows Brook to step out of the shadows of comic relief.
Brook has often taken a backseat to other characters during major arcs. While his contributions have always been valuable, they have rarely taken center stage. The Elbaph arc could finally change that. By giving Brook a unique and emotionally charged role that does not rely on cheap surprises or forced connections, Oda now has the opportunity to build something more organic. It can be a chance to explore the weight of memory, the sting of regret, and the courage to confront someone who may have lost their way.
In the end, the theory may be gone, but what remains is the possibility of something better. One Piece has always thrived not just on twists, but on the emotional truths behind its characters. For Brook, the next chapters may finally offer a story that does justice to both his past and his heart.
